Leak in Pacific Ocean: There is an area named Fault Lines in the Pacific Ocean, in which scientists have seen a strange leak. Such a leak has never been seen before today. Scientists fear that this leak can cause earthquake. This leak is known as the Pythia Oasis. This leak is in the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ).
Such an incident did not happen before today
According to experts, such a leak had never been seen before off the Pacific coasts of the United States and Canada. This is the first time such an incident is being seen. The leak is in the CSZ and it is the place where two plates collide. But, it is possible that this fluid is controlling the pressure between the oceanic and continental plates. The water coming out due to the leak is at the fault line, where the temperature remains between 300 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s why the ocean water is warm about 50 miles from Newport, Oregon.
Plates can move due to excess fluid
The report says that in any case, if more water continues to come out, it can increase the pressure on the fault. As a result of which the thrust on both the plates can also increase. In such a situation, if the tension increases and the plates start moving, then an earthquake can occur. Along with the leak, scientists also saw bubbles of methane rising a mile below the sea.
There is danger of earthquake
Evan Solomon, an oceanographer at the University of Washington and co-author of an article published in the journal Scientific Advances detailing the phenomenon, said that if fluid pressure is high, it means friction is low and the two plates can slip. Whereas, if the pressure is less, then the plates will lock. They say that the fluid coming out of the fault line is like leaking lubricant. This is bad news in terms of earthquake hazards. The report said that this leak could be a sign of a massive earthquake off the coast of North America.
